Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 14, 2023, as a spectacular celestial event is set to take place in Odessa, Texas. This annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. This eclipse will be visible for millions of people in the Western Hemisphere. This eclipse is often referred to as the "ring of fire" eclipse and will grace the skies of Odessa. The city's fortunate location near the eclipse centerline means that residents and visitors can expect an extended duration of annularity.

This Annular Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, but when it is at or near its farthest point from earth. Since the Moon is farther away from Earth, it appears small than the sun and does not completely cover the sun.
It is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specializied eye protection designed for solar viewing. Viewing any part of the bright sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause eye injury.

Saturday, October 14th the Friends of Kellus Turner Park will be a great location to view the annular solar eclipse. With the proper eye protection we will be able to view the "ring of fire" and eclipse activity.
Odessa College Downtown Eclipse Viewing
10am - 1pm
Odessa College Downtown Campus
Join us at our brand-new downtown campus to view the Eclipse with Odessa College staff, faculty, and families. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to get comfortable on our turf. Safety glasses are provided!
UTPB Solar Eclipse + STEAMfest
9:30 am: Meet us at the UTPB Quad (center of campus) and the Mesa Deck (at the Mesa Building) for the best seat in the nation to watch the solar eclipse! Scientists from UTPB, NASA, and the Gordon Center will launch scientific balloons into the sky, and you'll be there for it all.
10:18am- 1:20 pm: View the eclipse at UTPB, we'll provide the safety glasses!
2:00pm-5:00pm: STEAMFest- There will be interactive science and art activities for all ages!
